HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Updated: Aug 5, 2019

Universal Electro Tech and Universal Switchboards, formerly known as GP Electro-Tech Pty Ltd started its humble beginnings in 2011 from the back of a Yellow Mitsubishi Colt, that was in fact won from a poker game. Lao Tzue said “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”, in Daniel Goodman’s case it started with a deck of cards that allowed him to begin his journey on the road of electrical contracting. Dan landed his first facilities management job at St Brigid’s College in Lesmurdie, which was a pivotal point in which the company became established and was seen as specialists in the maintenance industry.

With the boost he needed, Dan could no longer manage everything from his Yellow Mitsubishi and moved to 182 Bennett Street in East Perth that was inside the office of Harcourts Central, where he stayed between 2013 – 2015.

As the business continued to grow, Dan outgrew the room he was renting in Bennett Street and in 2015 he and his team moved to 3A Church St in Perth, where he refurbished the office and workshop to meet the demands of his increased client base. It was toward the end of 2016 however, that Dan felt change was on the horizon and needed to make a difficult decision. Dan recognised that in order to excel beyond organic growth, a significant financial backing was required.

In the best interest of the company, its clients and a desire for sustainability in an ever-changing market place, in 2017 Universal Electro Tech was sold to Christopher Hicks.

Chris Hicks is a qualified electrician by trade but had a great love for people and making a difference on an international scale. In 1988 Chris put his boots aside and established Dare Contract Services in Australia, specialising in oil, gas, mining, engineering, energy and geo science recruitment. In 2015 he sold Dare Contract Services but remained in a consultative capacity until 2017. In 2017 Chris decided to embark on a new venture, where he would go back to his roots of electrical work and support the vision of Dan as an Investor. With more than 40 years of experience in major projects in Australia, Chris is excited to be part of the next generation of electrical innovations and works. CRH Electrical Pty Ltd was registered and trade as Universal Electro Tech and Universal Switchboards, providing a comprehensive range of technically advanced electrical services to the commercial, industrial, construction and mining industry throughout Perth, and regional areas of Western Australia using state of the art materials and componentry.

Dan the former director, was appointed in the capacity of National General Manager to continue to lead the company into the future of electrical solutions. With financial stability and an expanding team, this opened the door to real estate opportunities and refining where exactly we wanted to position ourselves. In January 2018 after carrying out extensive property searches in Perth, it became an easy decision to purchase premises in Belmont Business Park. Belmont is progressive and conveniently located to Perth Airport and the city, making it an ideal location to service customers near and far. We are equipped with cutting edge equipment, a hub of businesses around us that are aligned to our services and larger office and workshop space to accommodate any size job.

Looking back to the days where Dan had some basic tools in the back of his yellow Mitsubishi Colt and a ladder on the roof, what has remained constant with the company’s progression is the desire to make a difference to client’s experiences in electrical contracting. With a dedicated principal, a strong management team and a dynamic team of qualified electricians, we are confidently able to engage our services in emerging markets, where we are committed to workplace health and safety practices, environmental practices and quality workmanship. “Sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination - Drake”, we look forward to seeing where our journey takes us.
