NEW YEAR, NEW RESOLUTIONS 2019

Updated: Mar 29, 2019

It’s a New Year and with this comes New Year’s resolutions, setting new goals, aspiring for healthier living, physical fitness, losing weight, stopping smoking, having a happier outlook, gaining knowledge through learning opportunities and saving money. With an endless list of resolutions, the reality is that a very small percentage achieve this. Does this mean that our goals are simply unrealistic or overly ambitious that we are setting ourselves up for failure from the onset? As an employer it is imperative that we have business goals that are manageable and can be implemented over time, to ensure they are achievable. Universal Electro Tech and Universal Switchboards, want to sustain and grow their position within the marketplace and this means we have to evaluate our yearly resolutions and set short, medium and long-term goals.

Philip Clarke, psychology lecturer at the University of Derby Online Learning stated. "They set long-term outcome goals such as getting a 'dream body' or to spend more time with family and, as a starting point, these sound like good goals. The problem is that the goal-setting process for many people stops there. People who develop action plans experience less anxiety, more confidence, improved concentration and greater satisfaction about achieving their goals are more likely to succeed.” As a business, Universal Electro Tech and Universal Switchboards, has grown based on Word of Mouth but to expand our position we need new objectives. With the market being as competitive as ever, with thousands of Electricians and Electrical Contractors in Perth WA and surrounding areas, one of our goals this year is to increase our client base. As part of our action plan, we have started to engage in networking.

Networking simply stated is building relationships with people we know, like and trust and is something most of us do every day. The key to networking is to understand that you are not there to sell your company or its service, but rather to look for opportunities to help people solve their problem(s). People do business with people! It is about building a reputable reputation, connecting with customers by getting to know them and adding value to help achieve their goals, ultimately building trust. No matter how exceptional you believe your product or service is, it is another mere commodity to a prospective consumer. Sales and marketing have evolved considerably over the last decade and it is no longer about what you sell as an individual or a business, but how we go about selling it and what problem we are solving.

How often have you received a telephone call that interrupts you in the middle of something from someone you do not know, like and trust. We have all had those calls, someone trying to sell their services and stating all the problems that they think you have and how they can do a better job. This immediately puts ones back up and you do not want to engage in the call, let alone in their services or product offering. We no longer want to be inundated by telephone calls of services being introduced that have no value to us and our organisation. We want personable relationships, that are meaningful and collaborative. It is not solely about a solution to a problem, but being remembered for your behavior, delivery, body language, your passion for the industry you are representing and ability to manage a problem with professionalism and even a bit of humor. Will you be remembered enough, that a client calls you back in the future?

There are a number of great networking groups out there like District 32, Business Networking Company (BNI), Perth Business Growth Club and Business Women Australia to name only a few. It is important that as you engage on a journey of networking, understand the networking groups business model and if it is the right fit for you and your business. Networking is not about having a fling, its all about developing meaning and long-term relationships with people you know, like and trust. Remember it’s not always about show casing your own business and building relationships, but supporting other local businesses, their vision and dream. Shout out on the relevant Social Media Platforms, Google and your networking group to recommend their services or product offering if they have done a great job.

Networking allows us to expand and grow as a business. It enables organisations we use to flourish within the community, ultimately stimulating employment opportunities and the economy. We are excited with what the future holds and as a team we continue to work hard to ensure, goal achievement strategies throughout the year. “Approach the New Year with resolve to find the opportunities hidden in each new day” - Michael Josephson.
