Growing up we are led to believe that success is determined by wealth. What if success is more than prosperity? What if you could truly understand your why and what makes you want to wake up and get out of bed in the morning. Would this allow you to have more satisfaction and feel a sense of accomplishment and purpose, where prosperity naturally follows? Morgan Holmes is a mother to two daughters, a wife, business owner, active community member, animal lover and collaborator. Life had not always gone to plan for Morgan, and for many of us the same applies. We have different times in our lives when we flourish and find out who we are, what it is that we want to do and our why. There is not a ‘one size fits’ all in our journey to happiness and success.
This is Morgan Holmes story and her journey to what she defines as triumph. What is SUCCESS? And how I keep taking the very next step…
Although I have been running my own business for the past 16 years, I’m relatively new to the small business community. For most of that time I was consulting to a few large corporates. It has only been in the last few years that I have focused on supporting small to medium sized businesses. Prior to this I was pretty naïve about the realities of social media, marketing, branding, sales ladders, ideal clients, networking, and the list goes on. Now, I have the utmost respect for small business owners, I have learnt so much and have so much more to learn.
For most of my career there have been three common things:
A strong desire to help others be their best;
A knack for working with groups and teams;
Problem solving or solution finding.
And there was a fourth that was true until about 3 or 4 years ago!
For most of my career I was searching for ‘what do I want to do when I grow up’! It was only in the last few years that I was lucky enough to find it, and that’s what I’m doing now.
Why focus on small and medium sized businesses? Why not stick with large corporates? It’s far more lucrative! Why this path?
It’s simple really, I believe that everyone has so much potential and we all (me too) just need help sometimes to believe it and live it. And that if we could unlock that potential so that everyone was living the best version of themselves, then we would create a different world. A world with so much more compassion, collaboration, and inclusiveness, where there would be enough for everyone (including the planet).

This is why I created Unlocking U, so that I could make a difference, to help others discover and unlock their greatest potential.
As many small business owners know the first few years are tough, in fact many businesses don’t even make it. It is very easy to get lost in someone else’s definition of success, but what is SUCCESS. What is success to you?
Social media doesn’t help either; we mostly see everyone’s ‘highlights reel’, all the good bits. And then without even consciously choosing the comparisons start. But they are comparisons with a very small part of the picture. We end up comparing our whole story to someone else’ ‘highlights reel’. Which is not a fair comparison at all!
Figuring out what success means to you is critical. How else will you know what you are striving for? This idea resonates with me.
Success is: when you like who you are;
when you like what you do;
when you like how you do it.
Define your own success. What will it look like? What will it feel like? Take a holistic view. Make it as unique as you are. Measure your success based on that.
The small business journey is full of potholes in the road, twists and turns (that’s one of the reasons I love it), but how do I keep going? How do I keep taking the next step, how do I keep choosing adventure over fear?
I focus on my WHY, I focus on my hopes. That’s what keeps me going.
If you are unsure, if you feel lost in business or life, if you feel stuck or in limbo, figure it out. Find clarity on why you do what you do. Ask yourself ‘Why is it so important to me? Am I fulfilled? What is the legacy I want to leave behind?’
My personal why is about inspiring and supporting people to be at their best, to create a thriving world for future generations. This is what keeps me focused and taking ‘the very next step’, whatever that might be.
